About Eyelid Lifts

There are many benefits of receiving an eyelid lift. Smoother eyelid skin can restore a more youthful look to the face, as the sagging of the upper eyelids can cause one to appear tired, unhappy, or older than they are. (2) By removing the excess skin and bulging fat deposits above the eyes, your doctor can skillfully reduce puffiness, improve your facial symmetry, and leave you with natural-looking results.

An upper eyelid lift can also improve the functionality of the eyelids by tightening certain muscles that may have weakened as a result of the natural processes of aging. The results of an upper eyelid lift can last anywhere from 10-15 years.

Candidates for an Eyelid Lift

You may be a fitting candidate for an upper eyelid lift if you are looking to address sagging skin skin or weakened upper eyelid muscles. An upper eyelid lift can correct dermatochalasis, or excess hanging eyelid skin, and puffiness above the eyes. (2) All patients should be in good overall health without underlying conditions that would disrupt the healing process. Patients should also be prepared to quit smoking for a period of time before the procedure and during the recovery process.

Personal Consultation

Prior to the procedure, you will be required to schedule a personal consultation. You will undergo a medical examination and be encouraged to discuss your medical history. Your surgeon will ask you if you use corrective lenses and if you experience any of the following issues:

  • Glaucoma
  • Dry eyes
  • Excess tearing
  • Allergic reactions.

Your surgeon will discuss everything about your procedure with you at your personal consultation. They will get to know you and your journey so far, suggesting the best treatments and strategies to help you achieve your goals. This will also be a good time to bring up any potential questions or concerns you may have regarding the upper eyelid lift procedure.

To schedule your consultation today, call our office in Miami at (305) 901-2388 or request a consultation via our contact form.

Preparation

Your surgeon will discuss the preparation process with you prior to your procedure. Due to the personalized nature of the procedure, each patient will receive their own instructions on how to best prepare for their procedure based on their treatment.

In general, patients who smoke must be prepared to quit a month prior to their procedure and throughout the recovery period; tobacco and nicotine can disrupt the healing process. Patients must arrange transportation home from the procedure and ensure that a trusted individual will be available to assist them during the initial recovery phase. Scheduling time off from work and other commitments is also necessary to ensure patients have adequate time to rest and recover.

Procedure

To facilitate skin or excess fat removal, your surgeon will create an incision that follows the natural crease of the eyelid. This is to ensure a discreet scar after healing. Your surgeon will then skillfully remove excess tissue, creating a smoother facial contour and more wakeful expression. After your surgeon closes the incisions, you will be monitored for a period before being released to begin your recovery at home.

The upper blepharoplasty procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The entire procedure takes about 45-60 minutes.

Results and Recovery

After the upper blepharoplasty procedure, patients can expect to experience some bruising at the treatment site, as well as swelling. Your surgeon may prescribe medications to minimize any discomfort. You should keep your head elevated while sleeping or reclining.

After 2-4 weeks, the swelling should subside and the bruising will start to fade. While you will be able to return to most of your daily activities at this time, you should continue to avoid any intense physical exercise or strenuous tasks until your surgeon says it is okay. After the incisions heal more fully, you may be able to start wearing makeup again. Your surgeon will recommend that you use an approved ointment and sunscreen to help minimize any potential scarring.

After about 1-3 months, the scars will fade and become less noticeable as they are hidden among the natural creases of the eyelids. The final results will be more noticeable once the swelling more fully subsides. With excess skin and fat removed and repositioned, you will notice a more youthful look and wakeful expression. The results of the procedure can last anywhere between 10-15 years.

FAQ

What is an upper eyelid lift?

An upper blepharoplasty, or upper eyelid lift, is a procedure designed to revitalize the appearance of the eyes and tighten weakened muscles. Your surgeon can facilitate this by removing excess skin and fat from above the eyes. This procedure differs from the lower eyelid lift, which addresses sagging under eye tissue and/or bulging fat pads.

Who is a good candidate for an upper eyelid lift?

Ideal candidates for an upper eyelid are those who are experiencing any degree of sagging skin in the upper eyelid region. Candidates are often hoping to achieve a more wakeful appearance with the upper blepharoplasty procedure.

Is an upper eyelid lift procedure painful?

Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia is utilized during this procedure to help numb the treatment site and minimize any patient discomfort. It is normal to experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising during the recovery period.

Will there be noticeable scarring after an upper eyelid lift?

The surgical methods of the upper eyelid lift require incisions that will result in minor scarring. However, your surgeon will take great care to place the incisions strategically, so that scares will be hidden amongst the natural facial features.

How long will the results of an upper eyelid lift last?

The results of your upper eye lift can be seen for 10-15 years. An upper eyelid lift can take years off the appearance of the face, but the natural processes of aging and the downward pull of gravity will continue to affect the skin. We recommend utilizing sun protection and sunscreen to minimize sun damage and potentially prolong results.

Can the upper eyelid lift procedure be combined with others?

Yes, the upper eyelid lift can be combined with other procedures such as a lower eyelid lift for a facelift. Please consult with your surgeon if you are interested in combining your upper eyelid lift with other procedures.

Makeup can be worn as soon as 2 weeks after the procedure. Your surgeon will let you know when it is okay to do you; you will need their approval before applying makeup to the treatment area to ensure all incisions have fully healed.
